Are Doritos Vegan?

It Depends

Most Doritos flavors are not vegan because they contain dairy ingredients (whey, buttermilk, cheese, lactose), but a small number of varieties, notably Spicy Sweet Chili and Toasted Corn in the US, and Chilli Heatwave in the UK, contain no animal-derived ingredients.

The catch: The vast majority of flavors contain dairy (whey, buttermilk, cheddar/romano/parmesan cheese, lactose, skim milk, sour cream); only a handful of specific varieties are free of animal ingredients, and the list differs significantly by country.

In the US, only a few flavors are considered vegan: Spicy Sweet Chili, Blaze, and Toasted Corn (Lightly Salted Corn). In the UK, Chilli Heatwave and Original Salted are vegan due to different formulations, while the same flavor names in the US may contain dairy.

The popular Cool Ranch variety contains lactose, whey, and skim milk; Nacho Cheese contains whey, buttermilk, and cheddar. Disodium inosinate and disodium guanylate, sometimes flagged as animal-derived, are confirmed by the Vegetarian Resource Group to be produced via vegetable-source microbial fermentation by major suppliers.

Strict vegans may also note that refined sugar in some varieties could be processed with bone char, though this is a processing concern rather than a direct ingredient.
